Mozilla Sends C&D Letter Over Surveillance Software

The Mozilla Foundation has accused UK software group Gamma International of falsely associating one of its products with the Firefox name.

Finfisher is legitimate surveillance software thought to be used by governments to covertly obtain data.

It is installed unknowingly by its target computer user, often by disguising itself as an update to a well known programme such as Firefox.Mozilla Sends C and D Letter Over Surveillance Software [bbc.co.uk]

Considering Firefox updates itself, just how to these geniuses get someone to install this so-called software update in the first place? Would take some pretty stupid people, like most of the people, to fall for something like that :)

If they really wanted universal coverage they'd pass it off as a Flash update. I get (and ignore) those at least weekly.

Really there is no reason why everything should not update through a single mechanism that users are familiar with. Less knowledgeable users can then be told "this is the only way you update" and left with that.
