Mozilla releases boot to gecko as Firefox OS

The new OS will be based on Mozilla's "Boot to Gecko" project, named after the Firefox browser's HTML rendering engine. On Firefox OS devices, every phone feature – including not just games and apps, but also calling and messaging – will be an HTML5 application.

Two Chinese manufacturers, ZTE and TCL Communications Technology, have signed on to manufacture the first Firefox OS handsets, to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon system-on-a-chip (SoC) processors. TCL's kit will be marketed under the Alcatel One Touch brand.

Sounds suspiciously like the big-whoop-nobody-cares Chrome OS doesn't it?

They'd probably be better off spending their time fixing Firefox or trying to get Firefox included in existing handsets instead of spinning off a doomed for failure project.

What the heck, maybe they'll succeed despite themselves since the way Google is managing Android is starting to tick everyone off.

I just bought an Android 4 tablet and like it. What is wrong with how Google is managing it? Too much fragmentation is the main problem I can see.

I would like Firefox to succeed: but I would also have liked WebOS, ChromeOS and, most of all, Maemo, to succeed, but I doubt anyone is going to get enough commitment from the manufacturers, or be able to afford to market well enough, to compete with Apple and Google, so we are stuck with a duopoly (with MS as a distant third)
