I believe that mermaids do exist but unlike the usual stereotype they have the bottom half of a beautiful woman and the top half of a fish. More fun in some ways but no fun to kiss.

Actually the lack of a human lower-half was one of the main "promises" of the myth, at least in some versions. The implication being that the "entertaining" of sailors was to be achieved by unconventional means.

The more one speaks to those who others consider to be "otherwise sane", the more one is aware how, in fact they ( both groups ) are not sane..and are a very long way from it..

You also have the problem that any eye-witness evidence may be a hallucination.

You can make people see,hear, experience almost anything with the correct conditioning and stimulus and suggestions..a fact known to all illusionists, circus performers, kings, ad men, and popes, shamans, imams etc..just deal with the lizard brain ( limbic ) and the cortex, while distracting the cortex with whatever works..promise of a better (after)life usually softens the cortex enough to make it real easy..

After that a rainbow or a flame or even heat shimmer in the desert in the Middle East will get them seeing all manner of gods and their handwork..and the few who don't fall for the sensory over load will usually find a way to exploit those who do..

Mass hysteria is the easiest of all to induce and manipulate..especially in the ill educated or those looking for answers and crutches or outside entities to blame or to give them a feeling that something powerful cares for them ...
