The word "holidays" means days like Christmas and Easter. For example happy holiday's is typically said to people leaving on Christmas break. Vacation is the word typically used to mean travel to a remote destination. This isn't set in stone, but when I read the domain names it makes me think of Christmas. (for the record I am Canadian, hey!)

Its fine in UK English and most commonwealth countries, though. If your target audience North America or other English speaking countries?

Well, it seems harder to play with vacation.

There is simiilar in funcitonality site in Russia called turcalendar.ru, would that be ok something like travelercalendar.com or travelcalendar.com? Calendar, it's like to plan the vaction, weather, etc. I know there is difference with one or two L in travel(l)er for british and US, I think it is posiible to choose any of those. Anyway, which one would sound betteer with "calendar" or I am in wrong direction?

Also, if its global, remember other countries with large English speaking populations (India has twice as many people who speak English as the UK)

By the way there is well know UK site holiday-weather.com with 2M+ visitors per month. So probably holiday is not that bad.

No, that's the point. UK English and North American English use the word “holiday” differently. If your target audience includes both, you are better off avoiding the word entirely.

Are people visiting these sites because of their names or because of their contents? Does "google", "duckduckgo", "bing", etc... sound like search engine name? And more generally, do people really mind the name of a site (beside big brands) ? And do they even pay attention ? A domain name can be useful for people to remember it, and return directly, but nowadays, how many people are really using the Internet like that?

That was my thought too. Any passing domain-name dragon glancing through this thread would automatically look up any appealing name to find out if it's already taken--and if it wasn't taken before, it is now :(

Personally I refuse to pay anything more than registration fees ( ~ $8 / $9 , more or less depending of discounts ).

I hate businesses which are buying (renting) domain names, for the exclusive purpose of selling them at expensive price, so, even if I was seeing a domain name I would love to own , I would never feed this business model.
