One small catch:
You can't actually register a new domain with the Cloudflare Registrar. Not yet. Today, the service is restricted to existing Cloudflare customers transferring their existing domains to us. If you’ve had trouble transferring domains before, just wait: we’ve made the process extremely smooth and easy.
So, will it always be free if one doesn't have a CloudFare account?
What about parked domains? Free includes forwarding?
Is this move "all about the data"?
What about drop catching? It seems to me that CF might (rightfully) have an interest in the auctioning of domain names that expire . . and, therefore, CF might recoup some of the costs of free.
It will be interesting to see how this sorts itself out and when and/or whether those with larger domain holdings "make the move" OR IF other registrars start to "lean in" to this model in an effort to compete OR otherwise begin to offer other incentives.
Interesting times.
