Huh. The OP specifically said Canadian, so I'd have thought .ca as the primary.

Canada is linguistically split ( and it may get messier, and become an actual split ) so..the dotcom ( neutral TLD ) is IMO, a safer bet for the main site..

The .ca could be used later, for Canadian francophones..

.ca list better in canadian google, thats for sure and clients like domains with their coutry extension :)

I've had this dilemma before. Buy both, use the .ca if it's primarily Canadian customers and redirect the .com to the .ca This will identify with Canadians better and if they type in .com by accident then they will be redirected. If you expand to US, then use the .com for that and keep .ca for Canadian customers. You will also want to host in Canada to improve Canadian rankings, this means a Canadian IP not just a host that says they are based in Canada. Also, .ca extensions are supposed to rank better in Canadian indexes. Keep those things in mind.

Buy both, and any other that is available such as .net .info .org etc. All of these can be useful and be redirected to either yourwebsite.com or yourwebsite.ca . The .ca will rank better in Canadian indexes compaired to the .com but I would recommend using .com as your main page and get everything redirected to that.
