Godaddy is the biggest. Just from memory, it has about 30 million domains. These are the ICANN monthly registry reports. Most of them are in csv format and can be imported to spreadsheets. They are three months or so behind due to the registry contracts but they provide the stats on all accredited registrars.

The problem with grouping domains by nameservers (as I do every month) is that some registrars will have multiple nameservers and their clients will have their own nameservers.

It looks surprising but you've got to take into consideration that the region has a few strong ccTLDs like .cn (probably around 4M at the moment), .au (over 2M), .nz (around the 450K mark), .jp (around 1.2M), .kr (around 1M), .in (between 500K and 1.5M - Indian registry wouldn't say). Throw in the region's .com TLD footprint and you've got a very serious problem for what is essentially an English language term for a region without a political union (as the EU is for the 27 or so EU countries).

Timing was also a problem for DotASIA. It was a domain bubble TLD like .mobi except .mobi launched a few years earlier and took full advantage of the domaining bubble. DotASIA launched towards the end of the bubble and when the 2008 financial crisis hit, it was just coming out of its landrush phase.

It boils down to a few key elements.

Mindshare - it has to be immediately and universally recognisable to people in its market.
Infrastructure - the market has to have a well developed one and a lot of local hosting.
Community - the TLD has to have some kind of community of people who identify with it, develop in it and use it.
Economy - the market has to have a good one.

jmcc, your analysis with .nl reminds me of .ca

I live in the northern US and I watch a lot of Canadian TV. Nearly all the ads show a .ca website for the company that is advertising, and most are huge international companies. I'm curious, would you know how may .ca domains are registered?

Currently it is 1,851,127
