Parking can provide a traffic test meter and/or "reality check" of a domain's commercial viability.

If you park a domain and it receives little type-in traffic, there are few advertisers targeting the domain name's keyword(s), receives few clicks and those clicks generate trivial income then the domain MAY not be as good or valuable as the registrant assumed it was.

Parking isn't a definitive test of value but it's some evidence.

IF parking helps generate income to cover the cost of the domain, whilst awaiting a buyer or development, then I think - at the very least - domain parking is "practical". I followed someone's practical suggestion and, in the early years, my domains were generating $$$,$$$ - more than enough to cover the cost of renewal . . and then some.

well, after many years of parking I am switching to some own "projects". Parked domains do not develop in time because of poor or false content. I also belive that the gugl-algorithm detects filtered domain names to prevent them comming up in SERPs.

In my opinion parking is for domains from former projects which receive high traffic and when s.o. plans a different project with them in future. Also for selling it could be used for being listed in domain-portals.

Instead of parking it let s.o. use it for a while like i did with <a domain I own>.

Yes, leasing is another option, but it requires finding an interested party willing to pay.

Did any penalty/demotion follow from G after you switched back?

No.

However, I was worried my registrar was going to put a hold on the payment cause the Terms & Condition stated not to send traffic, while that specific site had several inlinks sending up to 1K visitors/day.
