What can possibly warrant such a price hike, anyone know? Are other registers also raising their prices or is Yahoo perhaps trying to get out of this business by strategically driving customers away?

If they do they probably do not care since they may only have 1 or 2 names and trust the Yahoo brand vs the little known registrar names domainers deal with (well known GoDaddy is a big exception and a reason GD is #1).
A Realtor I dealt with some time ago had a few names with Y (I believe she was paying approx $30 at the time) and when I pointed out she could pay far less (plus get good cust service and better control panel features vs Y) she really could care less about that and brushed it off as totally insignificant.
