I am trying to open a database from an old Vbulletin forum so I can take some of the data out and use it for key words and phrases. What is my best way of doing this?

You can open it via Excel. Data ->Import External data->New DSN. You just need the database IP Addres, a username and password with SELECT permission on the tables or views.
