Digg Slashdot Affect Database Hardware SPOF

I have a question has been through Digg, or Slashdot affect. What are main thing a site owner have to worry about. Database seems to be the Single point of faliure. Any hardware, software advice.

Has absolutely nothing to do with databases, in particular.

One tiny door. Many people. Need wider door. Or skinner people.

So, what's the tiny door on YOUR site? Imagine the opening sequence in "Get Smart". Now, imagine one of the doors is really, really narrow.
