supported by all the major browsers (firefox 3, IE7, opera 9, chrome?)

Yes it is,
But you will want to define it like this:
readonly="readonly"
Also it is good practice to use quotes for your values.
final should look something like this:
<input name="hgp2" readonly="readonly" class="idis">
