I found you can use Joomla extensions to generate sitemaps

instead of an external app

I'm converting my sites from Frontpage to Joomla. I was trying to find a decent online or offline sitemap generator and not having a lot of luck. They just didn't seem to give me what I wanted.

It suddenly hit me that there must be a joomla extension to run sitemaps. Sure enough there were plenty to pick from including many that are non-commercial (Free). The first extension I tried seemed a bit too complicated to set up. The second extension I tried seems to be working just fine.

I think most CMS have a module for this these days - if there's some task i want to do on a site with a CMS, I usually start with a Google search for

CMSName feature (plugin|module|add-on)
site:cmsname.tld feature (plugin|module|add-on)

As for site maps... I tend to use them, but of course some top SEOs like Dave Naylor argue that site maps are a bad idea, because it takes away an important diagnostic for your site. But alas, laziness wins in my case.
