This doesn't have to be for academic documents, but my main interest is in making it easy for external users to locate research materials uploaded onto academic portals.

PDF 'Document Properties' allows entering of a title, description, subject, author and keywords. I wondered these ought to be treated the same as HTML meta data, or whether people, search engines, other sources use this information differently?

Any thoughts or suggestions welcomed.

Use the properties as intended. Forget "seo", deal with the document itself.

Parsing of such is possible by se's, but not reliable across all platforms. PDF is not treated the same as html. K.I.S.S.!
