I'm sure you remember the case of the "Monkey selfie [webmasterworld.com]" when a monkey took a photo of itself using the photographers camera. The copyright case was settled in court by a US judge who said the copyright protection could not be applied to the monkey.

Animal rights activists continued the fight for proceeds to benefit the monkey.

Finally, it's been settled out of court with the photographer agreeing to donate 25% of any future revenue to registered charities involved in protecting the wildlife and habitat of Naruto, where the images were originally taken.

I read that David Slater (the photographer in this case) is in agreement with PETA to drop the appeal case and vacate the original court finding that had ruled against an animal's rights of copyright.
