What exactly do they teach Millenials these days?

Or do they just not learn anything?

I came across the site of a blogger today that literally has NO capital letters on any of the pages. No, let me correct that- all the titles are all caps, but everything else is lowercase.

The first word of each sentence isn't capitalized. City names and other proper names aren't capitalized. She doesn't even capitalize her own name. So she's consistent. (Oops- no she's not. She capitalized IT. Go figure!)

(And she professes to be a college graduate.)

It's almost painful to try to read. And it's really giving me pause- do I really want to do business with this person? Would all of her e-mails be completely lowercase as well?

Over the past year or so, I've gotten a couple of e-mails that had little to no capitalization in them. Some were even punctuation-challenged.

Is there something wrong with kids today? Or am I just overreacting because I had a birthday last week? :)

Maybe. I tend to think that they caught this habit from the people who allegedly educated them. Add in all the other folks who told them how "special" they were and .... :)

Some folks learned to type on their cell phones, so they are all thumbs. :)

Grammar and the art of writing is not taught these days. After all, government manuals and instruction lists are all that is deemed acceptable.

Then there is the obvious: just lazy.

Do not worry ..too much. We got a series of job applications from students from a certain UK 'university' a few years ago, and every one had grammar and spelling mistakes. Needless to say I hit the delete button.

If you read UK newspapers there's many grammar and spelling errors, all of which pass a word checker set up as 'American' language.

Sadly, may young folks don't pay attention to their style, as most of them are used to Instant Messaging tools which requires (for them) less attention to details like that.

Recent PR from a local Not for Profit had TWO extra words (duplicates) sequentially in the first sentence! Their editorial review was by committee - a mix of a few millenials, two Generation X's and one Baby Boomer.

I rejected it when asked to post it to the web. None went back and fixed the ones that made it out into the wild before I alerted them too....shaking head....

Even the "established" sites have these problems. (think "Gray Lady", etc.) Currently hiring millennials (cheaper) or H-1B "English is not their native language" workers (even cheaper).

There are times I wonder if the world of language (and sites) is slipping from the gutter into the sewer.

Then again I remember archy the cockroach who had editorial access back in 1916 to a major syndicated newspaper. Because he was a cockroach he could not hit the shift key and the letter key at the same time. Not saying the folks on the web these days are cockroaches, that would be rude ... but ... think about it. :)

Easily done when reworking content. As a writer in print media I often do it myself which is why the galleys go to somebody else for proof reading. When I read my own work I see what is meant to be there not what hit the screen.

From the article in The Times this morning it seems that today's kids are being taught more formal grammar at age 11 that I learned by age 16 despite studying Latin and French.
