Can anyone clarify what is legal use of news footage and images taken from broadcast sports and news outlets? Can content taken from their sites be used in any form or fashion on a private site? Can it be used as part of a piece uploaded onto YouTube?

Webmasterworld members do not give out legal advice, and in a case such as this consulting an copyright attorney might be a good thing.

In general it can be said that videos are copyright by the creator of the video and unless express permission is GRANTED to copy or reuse the work, one can usually assUme it is NOT to be shared or reused.

As regards sports teams, the vast majority explicitly deny the copy, share, or reuse of their photos, videos, etc.

Safe answer for all purposes: If the question itself contains the phrase "ripped off", don't do it.
