How best to archive content?

I have an event and venue website that has some events running for years, some for months and some for weeks. I add a new event and give it its own page. Given that many of the events then build up a page rank and have links, when that event finishes I need to remove the event from my 'live shows'.

What do I do with the placing of the original file? Do I leave it in the widget.com/greenwdgets.html in which case over time I will potentially have hundreds of files (not sure how the hosting provider + server will cope with that) OR do I move the files into say an 'archive' folder, but in this case the links and page rank will be lost?

Not easy to discribe this and hopefully not 'as clear as mud'

Any advice gratefuly received.

Gemini23, can you give each event a unique URL that will stay with it forever? If there's an "events" page it can link to active events, perhaps with a text excerpt. When an event is done, it would keep its URL but be linked to from a "Past Events" page or similar.
