with a domain name that will be registered to the same owner correct?

if it's simply going to be a snapshot of your current site with minimal changes, then yeah...it's probably going to be seen as a form of duplicate content...

Would it matter if the URL was ".co.uk" instead of ".com" though?

I was thinking that if I had a URL with the uk extension that maybe G would be smart enought to figuire out why we are doing this.

I've never had an issue with duplicate content and use templates to build certain articles all the time.

I think I am having this problem right now. I have put online .com and a .co.uk static pages in order to start getting indexed until the real site is online. The .com site was indexed within 2 days. the .co.uk hasn't been indexed in 20 days! Both pages are exactly the same as I had read in a Google Post that Google was able to see that .co.uk and .com sites were for 2 different crowds...
Did it happen to anybody else? Any guess how different the 2 pages should be to avoid being duplicate content?

I suppose I should clarify my previous post: I used templates to build articles but the copy is a bit different. If I had to quantify I'd say about 20-30% different.

marcoh, while I can't say that changing your content 20% will work for you, it's been my experience that I don't get whacked with penalties when doing so.

Using local hosting, US and UK, might help a bit, as will having the right back-link profile for each site.

You can also set your geographical targeting in Google WMC. That will also help a bit.
