Guilty as sin but let's use it to our advantage

Thought I'd share a little story

I never thought someone would copy the contents of one of blogs to their own. Why? Because the writings are personal....something along the lines of my struggle with eczema.

Having observed the offender takes a copy of my page as soon as I release it (obviously has subscribed to it), thought well do I want to shut down the site and alert them to how I know they copied my site or do I try to use this to my advantage.

So what have I done, put links back to my site from their site. Will that help me? I don't know but the full story is no longer in the blog and has to refer to pages on other sites I own. Would the offender know I've done it. The offender is so busy looking out for anyone's content on eczema he/she has failed to see the link backs.

So (again) should I continue with the game? And again will it help me? Dunno - will have to check the stats..........

Anyone else played games with an offender?

I didn't do this deliberately, but it happened years ago that someone copied an informational page from my site. I tried asking them to remove the page and contacted the webhost in Holland, but they did nothing. Then I realized that they had inadvertently left intact all the internal links on that page. For years I got clicks from this bonehead. I even put up a phrase in Dutch welcoming people who came from there!

That's one of the benefits of using absolute links rather than relative. Another thing you can do is drop your own brand name in occasionally, so anyone unfortunate enough to find the scraper site instead of yours is more likely to remember your website.

So in my latest article, I added the "bonehead" website copies content from other websites and that the information is not original.

The bonehead admin copied it into their latest page!

Think I've got a new hobby for a little while

Maybe the "bonehead" thinks your content is worthy of others to read a gain knowledge from. Since it is a blog and about your struggle with eczema he/she may be fighting the same issue and consider your writings great help to his readers as well.

We had an article "borrowed" a few years back which included a "Return to Top" link after each section, this just has href="#top"in the tag. Dunno what the person used to rip the page, but it managed to add the full url of the original page - so clicking the link on the copied page took you to the top of the article on our site.
