Same News Piece Submitted to me and another Niche News Provider

Does duplicate content effect entire site?

My site is one of the two sites on the net that attract the majority of visitors for our niche.

My questions is - what happens when someone in our niche submits a news article to both of our sites? I wouldn't mind if just THAT article isn't listed in Google because of duplicate content - because I want to provide the most current news submitted by users - to the community. My only concern is that if the entire SITE gets marked for duplicate content - just because I ran that article that the writer submitted to both of our sites. (basically press releases)

Any thoughts?

Sorry - let me rephrase. Will one page of duplicate content negatively affect an ENTIRE site?

I can't think of exactly how to do it but I know there is code that you can add so that the search engines don't read that particular page. I don't work on that side of things but I have seen it talked about before. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the issue at all.

you maybe refering to the NOINDEX.

You could also block that page in your robots.txt. Some advise to do both.

I think people get a maybe overly paranoid about this. Most news sites will run dozens of stories per day all identical. Most will run their own staff stories and suppliment with wire ones...which are all identical.

I don't see a great outcry of news site being removed from serps so I assume not a huge issue?

I may be totally wrong though and it is very harmful.

Thank you for the thoughts. So what you're saying here is that allowing Google to index that one page WILL effect my entire site?

I'll also experiment with noindex.
