New To This - Submitting Articles To Free Article Sites

Are there any 'quality' sites out there?

Hi there,

I am very new to web development - basically I am in the process of creating something specific that I was looking for and couldn't find. My husband and I are plugging along, a few hours here and there, and people are actually finding us on Google and reading several pages.

As the site nears the state where I want to actively market it, I see that some promote the idea of submitting original articles to sites that offer free content to other publishers, in exchange for a link to your website.

I see the logic behind this - the problem is, the other articles I read on those sites are really quite terrible. Some just suffer from poor grammar, others make no sense at all. Do people actually use these articles on their sites? How could this content add value?

I'd like to make some of my articles available to other sites, but I don't want to post them with what's there. Are there free article sites that offer quality content that I just can't seem to find? Should I submit my work to individual websites - as I would for a newspaper or magazine?

Many thanks in advance for any help you could provide.

You've hit on a very good point. Generally, the more of a free-for-all a directory is, the less value will be placed on any links you get from it. Some people do use those crappy articles, but their sites are generally not particularly good to begin with. There are a few good directories out there. Have a look at Google News and you can find a few places that would be worth submitting to. If you can submit stuff directly to quality websites and online newspapers that would definitely be much better. Just make sure they give you a good link in return.

Best not to give away your own content. Create content specifically for distribution. Keep them separate. Don't dilute the uniqueness of your website.

Good link [webmasterworld.com]

Old:
Write 300 word articles of medium quality and submit them to 50 article directories. Wash, rinse and repeat 50 times for the same site to the same 50 directories using the same bio line in all of the submissions at the bottom of the article.
New:
Write 800 word articles for sites that accept submissions that publish based on merit and not that you know how to fill out a form and giving them a custom article written only for their site. Link out generously to other sites in the article and be sure to include a link of your own (to something legitimately helpful to readers of the article) within the article if possible.

Welcome to WW.

Great thread Oddsod!

Thanks so much for posting it, and thanks for the welcome too!
I've already spent a great deal of time lurking and learning here, and I suspect I'll spend a lot more...
