Ensuring my site content is indexed before someone steals it.

I'm a "Google Duplicate Content Filter" sceptic, that’s to say I have seen dupe content ranking all over the shop and I’m not convinced it exists or at least is any good.

However, just to be on the safe side having spent money getting some really good juicy, professional, original content written for a site (about 200 pages) I’d like to know if there is any way of ensuring that my content gets indexed by the major engines before a competitor sees it, steals it and then has it indexed before me...?

For example, will the Google Sitemaps tool get the robot to visit all the pages in the file and index them in one go as soon as the sitemap is uploaded? Or, will it just grab a couple of pages and then disappear for a couple of days allowing competitors all the time in the world to copy, paste, upload and then benefit from my effort? (We all keep an eye on each others sites regularly by the way I’m not being paranoid)

Having a site map that you submit to google is a good idea - no promises however on G's part on how quickly they'll index your pages. It does tend to take away any problems you might have with broken links, etc. that can impede deep link indexing. If you're worried about your content being stolen, I wouldn't. Make sure you claim copyrights to all content, include an originally posted date if you like, you can even print the article and send it to yourself via certified mail (so it is dated) then don't open it. This will ensure your authorship prior to their posting, but is going a bit too far considering how much content can be published. If it is your content send an email demanding they take it down immediately, I've never had a problem. If it persists it's a good idea to get your lawyers involved - it's pretty serious business if they're truly stealing your content.
