Amazon has filed lawsuits against two businesses for allegedly providing fake reviews on Amazon's site.

Amazon said in a statement the lawsuit seeks “to shut down two major fake-review brokers” that it claims “helped mislead shoppers by having their members try to post fake reviews in stores” like Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Etsy.

Reviews are a can of worms. Most users don't bother to post reviews and those that do only give 3-4 stars and sometimes 2 stars when they actually liked the product or service. It costs very little to purchase 5 star reviews and most of those 5 star reviews that I do see are most likely purchased... and most of the 1 star reviews that I see for our own products and services have definitely been posted by jealous competitors.

Where it hurts us is in app reviews. Why Apple and Google allow such reviews is beyond me. Dumbest idea ever as it is the easiest thing to exploit or use to discredit.

At least Amazon lists reviews by verified purchase. I have found useful information about products in some of their reviews. I have also seen many reviews from folks who didn't read the instructions and might have avoided their complaint.

Reviews, both good and bad need to be taken at less than full faith.

But those are the most fun! “Oi! This compost bin doesn’t have a bottom” and “This Garklein recorder is way too small” and so on.

Oh, wait, I guess those are the ones that didn’t even read the product description. Different issue.

I often see product reviews that are glowing so much i'm blinded by the light. I always read into the reviews before making a purchase, having been caught out once a long time back. I'd also agree that some negative reviews are people not reading about the product.

It's good to know action is being taken, but the tide and the currents are strong.

Heh ... Looking at Amazon reviews (ira shopper there) it seems many of the dates are from 5-8 years back ... is there any kind of "cleaning" being done, or has no one posted a review in 2022?

BTW ... quashing and suing bad actors is always a good idea. :)
