In addition to what tangor said (including the welcome), please give specifics about what type of online forum you are asking about and your definition of "successful."

Otherwise, the question, as stated, will most likely just get you a lot of "yes" and "no" answers.

Facebook has just posted a set of rules for online communities / how to deal with uneducated or uninformed users - should they be considered as a gold standard for all online communities / forums?

Every time this subject line floats to the surface, I think: First step is to turn the clock back at least ten years. Fifteen is probably better.

I'd say back to 1986! ^^^
