An open source alternative to Facebook - called Diaspora - has gone live.

The "privacy-aware" social network was founded earlier this year during a period when Facebook came under fire for its privacy settings.

The community-funded project is currently only open to a small number of invited people.

Diaspora says it hopes to begin adding more people in the coming weeks.

I guess there's no way to speed up the process of getting an invite if you weren't one of the kickstart investors.

Creators behind the new Facebook rival - Diaspora - said they have placed a special focus on privacy and security, whilst giving greater power in the hands of users.

Will be interesting to see if they gain any traction considering that Facebook has already established itself with such a big following.

Nonetheless, it is always good to see healthy competition for companies that threaten to become too big and unwieldy.

I'm just asking as a general:
- Anyone got themselves registered yet?
- What's the general feel about this new player? Would you use it?
- Does anyone "trust" the pitch about it being more secure & private?

Who needs yet another giant hub? It would be more useful if the software were released to be freely downloaded to form hundreds of thousands of communities and morphed into an add-on to a myriad of already existing applications such as wordpress, phpbb, vbulletin, ecommerce software etc.

actually unlike a giant hub i believe diaspora is geared toward ownership of your own data such that you can unplug from the grid as you wish and decentralization where you can set up your own server and form your own community.

I really want an entity like this to thrive and to counter act the dark side.

But I still think they got the wrong name. And they don't have the true dot com version of the site anyway.

One other point: It's supposed to be secure in that 'you share what you want to share, and with whom'. i.e. Zuckerberg and apps developers can't crawl and data mine.

But then isn't it the case that the data is distributed and that you can setup a server node? What if badguy sets up a node and hosts data? Can he not just access the tables?

OK they may be encrypted but with the data on his server it wouldn't take long to unlock.

Maybe I got this bit wrong. But I'm damn right the name is stupid and won't catch on!
