If I want to implement a "tweeting" feature, I don't really think I should call them tweets since my site isn't twitter.com
Is there an official word for this sort of feature yet?

Whatever you decide to call it, you might want to do that in private instead of public so you can retain the name/copyright...

In short, no. Tweets are tweets. It's not "instant messaging" or ... anything except a "tweet" particularly if it uses that same methodology of sending... if it doesn't, then it isn't even a tweet...
All I meant was if this is something new, originating from your site, and is NOT a tweet, you might be on to something. :)
