FaceBook Gift Shop shutting down.

The days of digital birthday cakes, virtual bottles of champagne and other cutesy icons from Facebook are numbered.

Facebook Gifts, the virtual shop born out of a 2007 "hackathon" by FB staffers, will close on August 1, even as the social networking giant looks for other ways to make money.

"Closing the Gift Shop may disappoint many of the people who have given millions of gifts, but we made the decision after careful thought about where we need to focus our product development efforts,"

I guess they couldn't shame enough people into paying real money for virtual gifts.

Perhaps it could have been rebranded as an "eCard" shop. I do think people sometimes want to recognize a birthday or other milestone, and would spend a small amount to do so electronically.

This was free money for them. They must be making a killing on their ad product to get rid of this. Or maybe the free gift apps killed it.

I hated this feature. Glad to see it go. Now if they can only get rid of Farmville and all of the other garbage, I might use it more often.

travelin cat, just choose to "ignore" all messages from certain apps - Thats what I done when they started appearing and I don't get any rubbish in my feeds. :)

absolutely, the day I blocked farmville and mafia wars was the day FB actually became usable for me. Bejeweled Blitz...I'm looking at you next!

I think something like JibJab would work seeing as they already have the photos in most cases

I never liked this feature but think it's strange that they would give this up if it's profitable...
