Social network giant Facebook will roll out a new set of privacy settings to all its users starting on 26 May.

The company said it will post the details on its blog.

Facebook faced a barrage of criticism from users over a series of tweaks that left its members unsure about how public their information had become.

Some profile owners have threatened to quit the site on 31 May in protest. Founder Mark Zuckerberg admitted the company had "missed the mark".

"I can confirm that our new, simpler privacy settings are starting to roll out tomorrow evening so stay tuned on our blog for more details," said a spokesperson.

This really is a mess. They need to get it correct and stop changing things. It really looks like they are amateurs running a billion dollar business. That's scary.

Their CEO is a 26 year old kid who stole code he didn't have the rights to. Not sure what you're expecting from Facebook.

Hopefully they don't default all the sharing to "on" like they did the first time around. They really look like they are floundering and are setting up the "next" site for success. Diaspora?

I'm solving all of this mess by simply ditching my Facebook account. I'm giving it until the end of this month for people to ask for my email/IM addresses, but I've already deleted most of my profile information.

According to research published on a well known tech blog deleting your data (pictures to be exact) doesn't actually remove it from the system and it remains available if you know the urls... Now that's creepy!
