wow... if they can monetize their search with just 5% of the revenue-per-search that google generates, they will have a very serious business on their hands.

As far as multiple accounts are concerned, yes, i'm sure there are, but it's still a big number, and growing fast.

I agree, twitter it's not for everyone, in which case, I wonder why some people continue to pour scorn over the service that helps so many. My advice; don't follow people that only talk about their breakfast. ;)

That undoubtedly includes automated API queries, so would include queries from Bing and Google, which they can't directly monetize.

It sooo much more than what you had for breakfast (ok some tweet for that!) but the scope of Twitter is evolving faster than we can categorise. People track an Iranian protest in real time - changing the very nature of the protest. Opinions about the imminent uk election are developing - our politicians think they are up with Twitter but they have barely a clue how to spot and track a trend (they think putting out a few cheesy tweets puts them 'in touch'). Organisations try to cover their dirty tracks with old style legal power - A tweet frenzy unveils their activity....

Presumably Twitter will be able to add ads directly into the data it sends in response to API calls at some point - and because they'll have the same 140 characters and perhaps a URL-shortened link as "regular" tweets neither the APIs nor the search engine "partners" will be able to strip out the ads.

So if they decide to go that brazenly for a cash grab, they should come out of it pretty well given their numbers...

Why Ohhh why don't they build their own contextual ad system. Self service to buy ads and there shown on a users stream, search results, rss feeds and api calls.

Will it cost them users? I doubt it. Who refuses to use a service simply because they show targeted ads to users. True there will be a few who leave or choose to block ads, but it doesn't matter because they aren't making any money from them anyway.

Twitter have the numbers. It's time they done something with them.
