Has Twitter Hit The Tipping Point?

I just returned from Pubcon and SXSW Interactive, and Twitter has clearly hit critical mass among web professionals like SEOs, bloggers, social media types, etc. Every conference session was crowded with laptop users, the majority of whom were logged into Tweetdeck or a Twitter web interface.

Social media presenters at these conferences seemed to spend most of their time talking about Twitter despite other social apps having higher market share.

The real question is whether Twitter is ready to break out in the mass market. So far, that hasn't happened, particularly among younger users who flock to Facebook.

What do you think the chances are that Twitter will explode in 2009?

There's still a huge rift between those who get Twitter and those who are still asking why should I be using this? The momentum has been building this year though...

One thing I found in talking to people about Twitter is that even web-savvy people didn't get Twitter at first. "Sounds dumb" seems to be the most common reaction. Oddly, you have to engage with Twitter for a week or two before it starts to make sense.

I'll agree that I let my account linger for quite a while. I had a lot of trouble getting it to work with my phone. The Japanese carrier I was using didn't support SMS and the phone's browser wouldn't allow password entry into the form...thus no mobile Twitter for years.

Once a bunch of people I knew started using it then the fun began. I'm not the most prolific poster, but I follow a lot of people and get a lot of info from it. It took me years to get to this point though. ;)

Every once in awhile I ponder twitter and how it could benefit me. Lot's of talk about networking, business opportunity and website traffic. But everytime I look around twitter, it's just a bunch of senseless rambling.

Yesterday I was trying to explain twitter to my girlfriend and the dilemma of if I should even bother trying it.

Not being a big computer person, her response to me was: "so everyone that uses twitter is a twit?".

Ya, I won't be using twitter...
