I am building a new interface for my web site and trackbacks were something I wanted to include because it's nice to know who's talking about your site, but the more research I do into trackbacks the more I notice most of them are just spam.

Go to G's blog search and add "trackback" to any search and it's all spam.

So are trackbacks dead? Is there anything new taking it's place?

There are still sites out there that list trackbacks on entries, it's just that a lot of automated abuse really took the value out of them, and the few remaining trackbacks are filtered heavily.

I think trackback filtering has come a long way. I'm actually turning it back on for some of my sites. I had it turned off for several years due to the abuse.

Is there anything new taking it's place?

Good question. My feeling is that Trackbacks aren't dead, they're just on life support.

Funny you say that, I killed my trackbacks a year or so ago, but have turned them back on because I like the idea. Looks like the new filtering is working better for me as well.

The idea is great. The unstoppable automated abuse was not. I'd love to see a resurgence in the use of trackbacks on a legitimate level.
