Facebook Chat Being Rolled Out

This week marks the launch of Facebook Chat—a new way for you to communicate with your friends in real-time.
We'll be rolling this out slowly going forward, but fairly soon you'll notice our new Chat bar at the bottom of your browser—no installation or assembly required. From this bar you can view your list of online friends and open conversations with any or all of them. There's no need to setup a "buddy list." Unlike the Wall or Inbox, the messages are delivered and displayed to your friend as soon as they're sent, so you should expect a response right away and without any page loading.

With so many 3rd party chat applications, I don't see a point really. But yes maybe it would be more popular.

The point is, it's integrated, eliminating the need for third party chat from other players.

If your clients are anything like mine there's going to be a flood of phone calls from people that want to implement the same thing.

Facebook was tolerated in the office up until now but I can see some blocks being very quickly put in due to this. Letting people check their mail every so often is fine, but I can see people spending all day on a facebook page chatting away with their friends.

When it started to do Social Networking better than the other main players out there and is now indespensible to many who use it. A bit like the way Amazon set the standard for retail sites.

That's the same logic for banning the internet completely at work. I always find this method of policing employees baffling (and bad for morale) - surely you should only get into trouble if it's obvious you've been skiving and have no evident work to show for it?

It hasn't. It's the driver of Social Networking, which is all about communication.
