Best way to display replies and quotes?

What's the best way to display replies? The bulletin board way where it's just dumped at the end, youtube style where its indented or like digg where replies are dynamically retrieved via AJAX?

Also, are most users these days savvy enough to know what those quote tags are or would there be users out there who would actually be wondering, 'uhh what is that?'

I guess it depends on your community and what the nature of posting is like.

A forum-style display is in my opinion the most "democratic" - everyone's post, including the thread-starter's, is displayed with equal emphasis.

Blog-style replies tend to emphasize the original post and make the comments less important.
