Question - Sending e-mail notifications from forums.

Do you want an email notification of new replies?

I have a forum that my webmaster custom made for me. Whenever someone gets a response from their post (just like here) they also get an email.

The problem: If they are using AOL then chances are they wont get that email. Any suggestions?

Also, what are the rules for this feature? Since they are posting on my site is it a MUST that I allow them to check the little box to receive an email or can I set it where it automatically emails them?

Thanks in advance!

Typically, forums have a checkbox in the member profile that sets whether their thread subscriptions are automatic or manual. You can set the default for new members, but they can change it. There may also be a setting for frequency - immediate, once a day, etc.

Well behaved forums don't barrage members with emails - they'll send them a notification, and then no more until the member checks in.

It's necessary to make unsubscription easy. Even when you do that, some lazy members will find it easier to report your notices as spam than clicking the "unsubscribe" link.
