Web Forums as it relates to SEO

Hi all,

I have a gaming client that, I feel, could benefit from a gaming forum.

I need some insight on:

The importance of a web forum and it's benefits?

Web Forums and SEO. Is there a relation?

On the plus side, a forum can provide an SEO benefit, additional content, as well as add to site stickiness and repeat visitors. A successful forum will attract some links, too.

On the minus side, the SEO benefits of the forum will be small compared to the initial effort involve in getting the forum going, promoting it, tending it carefully for a few years, etc.

Purely from an SEO standpoint, you'd probably get better ROI from buying articles and hunting/buying links.
