A Forum for targeted community

I am running two sites and recently provided both with forums.

Each site is targeted to specific community: one is of retrospective (nostalgic) nature and is dedicated to the 20th Century computers of the well known manufacturer, while another is covering the usage of modern software package dedicated to ships maintenance.

While visitors of the first site prefer send me email and ignore forum, visitors of the second started to use forum from the very beginning.

Why things a going that way and what may be the correct policy to up and running both of the forums?

Any suggestions?

forum is nothing but a platform for discussions. You will have to find the right pulse which demands discussions and then start promoting it.

You could politely ask that they post their comment/question/request in the forum so that the whole commmunity can see your reply.

Or, you could post a Q & A yourself.

Starting a forum can be challenging - check the forum library for some ideas.

Mine the email submissions for article topics. Everyone wins this way--the users get questions answered, you get articles for the site that are guaranteed original and meet a need.

We do this one one site too, although in a blog format. Questions are submitted by web form, and the most interesting ones are published with an answer. In a forum format, this would be a fine opening for a discussion.
