Google Services Block In China Relaxed

For people in China this must be a good news. For those of us outside the region I can't imagine how it might be frustrating.

Users in China were able to access online services for Google Inc on Thursday, after more than a month of severe disruption that almost completely blocked people from using features such as its search, maps and e-mail functions.Google Services Block In China Relaxed [reuters.com]

Google declined to provide immediate comment.

The block could be reinstated at any time though, so it would be hard to rely on Google services from China. The sporadic availability of Google really pushed people to local services.

and of course, that was the whole point, to strengthen the local offerings.

I transited in Beijing airport on July 8/9 and the blocking was still so severe that I had a hard time to connect to google even over an ssh proxy connection to my German server. In the past, I was able to use the HK servers of google or rather, I would be automatically redirected there.
