How are people doing it?

What is the best resource for keyword research for Asian countries where Google isn't the dominant search engine? Google's Keyword Planner has (understandably) a low count for Simplified Chinese keywords.

Is the Baidu PPC keyword tool better?

Hong Kong and Taiwan both use Traditional Chinese, but their underlying languages are Cantonese and Mandarin, so the sentence construction will differ. Does the Google Keyword Planner have that granularity?

Is anyone doing keyword research in Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia, Khmer, Thai, Lao etc?

Preliminary question: Does google understand Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia, Khmer, Thai, Lao etc? You can tell by looking at any random search result.

I've occasionally done searches in two unrelated (not Asian) languages that google doesn't know. It handles these by treating all searches as exact match. This does not get us far when the language in question is inflected and/or agglutinative and/or compounding and/or polysynthetic-in-general ... as most languages are.

For keyword purposes it means that google doesn't know that "widget", "widgets" and "widget's" are all the same word. Or, for that matter, that "and" isn't a keyword.

In mainland China Baidu's data will be a lot better. Google's keyword data for China is probably better for the Hong Kong & Taiwan markets as you noted. Google will list users by zh-cn, zh-tw and zh-hk, but it's not easy to see the language split within those countries from standard Analytics reports. It might be possible to setup a custom report that breaks that down more, but I haven't done so.

I'm doing some of that now. Google has been the best source for those languages for me.
