China's Alibaba launches new search engine

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group has launched a new search engine directly challenging the nation's search companies for market share.

The new site [s.aliyun.com] comes from the group's Alibaba Cloud Computing business.

Is this really a new search engine, or just a re-branding of China Yahoo's search?

Hmmm.. I think it is just a re-branding, you know China.

Do you have proof from SERPs you follow?

If it was a new engine wouldn't we all see some new bot crawling around?

Apparently that agent string is Alibaba/Yahoo Spider. Have you seen that on your Chinese content? I don't see that particular string, but there is a ton of Yahoo!Slurp activity from the US and China with aliyun.com in the string for my sites.

I see some pages of mine are indexed, but I don't see Alibaba bot visiting me. Tons of Yahoo Slurps, just like you mentioned. Maybe they use Yahoo's data but serve different results...

I just compared it with yahoo.cn for both image and text search, and it appears it's just a mirror of yahoo.cn. Even the layout is the same, the only difference perhaps is the logo and appearance of ads. Other than that the results are identical.
