Why Hasn't Safari Skyrocketed Like Chrome Has? [techcrunch.com]

Remember Safari?

While Chrome has skyrocketed from 0 percent market share in August 2008 to over 25 percent last month, Apple’s web browser lingers somewhere between 5 and 8 percent, depending on what numbers you look at. While its growth seemed to stall out in late 2008/early 2009, Safari has been growing again since then. But it has been at a very slow, methodical pace compared to the Google browser.

Given the fact that both browsers are based on WebKit — a layout engine which was born out of Apple — why hasn’t it been Safari that has taken off, instead of Chrome?

Uhm... Because Safari isn't being promoted by every tentacle of a monopolistic octopus? The people who use Safari are the people who use MSIE. Well, except that they chose to go the extra mile-- or spend the extra $1000-- and buy a Mac in the first place ;)

Anyone got the rough stats at their fingertips? Percentage of Windows users whose browser is something other than MSIE, vs. percentage of Mac users whose browser is something other than Safari.

Hm. Percentage of Windows users who know what a browser is, vs. percentage of Mac users who know what a browser is. (You probably know I'm not kidding. "I don't know what a 'browser' is. Let me go on the internet and google the word.")

Safari is slower and harder to load, even on a mac. You click on Safari and you get the beach ball of doom for two or three seconds.

Google really is a lot faster, even on Macs.

And with Safari, the search is off to the far right of the screen. In Google you get the search right there in the tool bar.

Clue: Safari SUCKS!

I tried using it again just for testing something the other day and it was a maddening experience.

not sure about that, plenty of stuff that sucks is popular!

all i know is that in London, there has been a massive advertising campaign for chrome, i imagine this has gone on elsewhere too.
