What's the use of <img> tag following affiliate link?

Hi there.

I would like to ask about the uses of <img> tag following after the affiliate link..Will tracking be affected if i remove the <img> tag?

For example:

<a href="http://www.example.com/click-#######-########" target="_top">blue widgets</a>
<img src="http://www.example2.com/image-#######-########" width="1" height="1" border="0"/>

this is the HTML link format we usually get from Comission Junciton Get link(HTML) section. If I eliminate the <img> tag behind the <a href> tag. Will it be a problem in tracking?

I'm asking because I'm making a form where i want to place my affiliate link in the "action". It's quite impossible to place also the <img> tag right?

The tracking pixel image is a way for both you and the merchant to monitor impressions and clickthrough rate. It's one more way to track performance. Sales would still be tracked if you eliminated it, but useful information would be lost.

The <img> bit does not need to be "right next door" to the main tracking link. It could be somewhere else in the page code and still do its job.

If you move tracking pixels around, be sure to remember what's what so that if you change any links later you don't end up with stray tracking pixels that no longer match the main tracking link.

Don't ask me how I know that ... ;)

Many browsers refuse to load that extra image now - they identify it as "spyware".
