Where is the best place to put a form on a page?

Hi-

I am curious if anyone could tell me the best place to put a form on a web page. I would think it should be below the value prop, but often wonder if having it on the sidebar above the fold would be a better idea.

Currently we have a link to a form on the page, but I am about to play around with the form on the actual page itself.

Also would anyone happen to have a best practices guide of lead gen (via form submission) for b2b and b2c they would be willing to share?

It might be helpful to see the page in order to provide better guidance. Fortunately there are pros and cons to form placement. IE, length of data, whether the form should be on the same page, where does the form seem to fit in the flow of the documentation you're providing. and more.

In the applications that I build I see forms as being one part of the wizard that walks clients through a process. I've not used a form to actually collect information on individual subscribers WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED in an offer. However, many sites that I go to .. such as white paper websites .. usually send out emails with links to a page where I can register to receive the paper.

Hope this helps, or at least provides some suggestions on where to look at how other companies are using forms.

If you're doing lead gen, then I would say that split testing and a chi-square test will tell you the best place for your form.

Have you checked out Google Website Optimizer? It will automate both the splitting and the chi-square analysis (actually, I don't know what algo it uses, but some test of statistical significance.
