I use a Mac (not Free/Cheap).

However, an Intel Mac, running VMWare Fusion, or Parallels Desktop, is an ideal Usability test platform.

You can use either ScreenFlow or Silverback as a Mac-based recorder, and it will record, even if you have VMWare set as whole screen (rendering the Mac an effective Windows machine).

In that case, I can't help. When I took the Nielsen-Norman Group's class, they were pushing a multi-hundred-dollar package, but that was nowhere near cheap. Silverback is 50 bucks, and Screenflow is a hundred.

I think some screen recorders like DemoCreator, Captive, and Camtasia can get the task done. But the three mentioned above are not free. There are some freeware like Camstudio, Tipcam, and Jing Project, but their editing function need to be enhanced. If you just want to record what happens for future playback, that is enough.

Another program that might do the trick is Winks and it's free.
