Just because the big guys don't do certain things doesn't mean it is all of a sudden useless or something we can just brush off as pointless fluff. There are plenty of other big players that do what's right.

Yes, it does. But, let us not forget that many many still use old school editors which churn out broken markup. Yet others use old "templates" with outdated markup, and never think to updated. And then, for others saving those extra two bytes per page view become very very important.
