The Standard match type displays your ads for exact matches to your keywords, as well as for singular/plural variations of your keywords and common misspellings of your keywords.
The Advanced match type displays your ads for a broader range of searches relevant to your keywords, titles and descriptions and/or web content. If you use the Advanced match type, and to help maximize the relevancy of your listings to search users, make sure you take advantage of Excluded Words, which are words or phrases that prevent a listing from matching a search query.
They don't always catch common misspellings so you should submit them as you think of them, as misspellings can generate good conversion rates. You sould also submit all singular/plural/misspelling variations of your terms to Google and MSN as their exact match doesn't catch these.
Cheers, Mary
I have never seen it do other than that and we have run thousands of keyword campaigns on Yahoo.
If you can provide some examples where you have seen that was not the case I can check with some of my contacts at Yahoo and see if there is a different understanding.
Thanks, Mary
The standard match type displays your ad for exact matches of your keywords, including the following:
1.Variations in case.
2.Singular and plural forms of the keyword.
3.Common misspellings of the keyword.
4.Topics relevant to the keyword.
5.Topics relevant to your titles and descriptions.
It really becomes difficult to bid properly when Yahho has such a broad range of criteria for display. I think they are making a big mistake.

i think they made a mistake in the link you provided, they're talking about understanding whihc ads will show and they added points 4 and 5 mentioning your ads are subject to relevancy requirements... we expect just a strict definition of how standard match works in the "understanding match types" explanation, but they're saying that relevancy also plays into the matching algo, which we understand... in the link you provided, read the advanced match details about suede shoes and you'll have to conclude they've erred in their points describing standard match. i have tested my standard-only matches in panama and found them to behave like points 1,2,3 - cases, plurals, misspellings - but not "related topics" (which can be construed as synonyms or as someone adding relevancy details to the discussion we expect to be more narrow covering just matching algo stuff, not relevancy filtering).
they need to clean up their guides to avoid confusion.
standard matches are just cases, plurals/singular vars and misspellings.
I would love to believe that standard where as narrow as you describe. Can we get some definitive information from Yahoo?
