But wtf, Marissa Mayer? DIdn't she just move from Google to Yahoo the week before last? Now where's she going?

I'm not surprised about the directors changing, but the name change must be to distance itself from the recent news of email hacking [webmasterworld.com] and the legacy of Yahoo.

It's been on the TV news today. When you hear it spoke, it works well.

Alta(vista) + (Aliba)ba = AltaBa. Yahoo owns AltaVista and a share of Alibaba, the Chinese ecommerce site.

Aha, I have now had time to read the SEC filing and Yahoo is not changing its name. Not all of Yahoo is being sold to Verizon, and it's only the remaining investment divisions not part of the acquisition which will change names. Yahoo branding will continue.

Now where's she going?

Probably anywhere she likes with a $50m+ severance package.

They forgot about the .net and .org extensions of the domain name - someone else owns those two.

@shri - that was the thinking a few years ago... to own all the variants of your domain TLDs, but since ICAN released so many new TLDs, that consideration, while possibly still prudent, is no longer a major concern for most.

According to the local news Altaba is short for Alternative Alibaba aka a big fat waste of money on hacked accounts and lost reputation and customer trust. Why it's still around baffles me to no end.

It's still a cheap and worthwhile part of an overall strategy at protecting your own brand - grabbing the .net version of your prized .com domain is a lot cheaper than hiring a lawyer to make a fruitless attempt at getting someone in a foreign country to take down the .net version of your trademarked name.

Anyhow - to me Yahoo continues on the path of total fubar - and watering down one of the more iconic brands in internet history I have difficulty seeing as the answer to their problems.

I'm rooting for them, I really am, but I feel like a Cleveland Browns fan.
