Just this morning, with the Department of Justice threatening to sue to block a proposed search advertising partnership, Google announced it was walking away rather than face a protracted legal fight."It's disappointing to us that Google didn't want to defend this deal," Yang told conference program chair John Battelle. Battelle interviewed Yang as part of the three-day conference, which is focused on the theme "Web meets world."
Google got burned with Myspace when they promised to much to get the deal, and my guess is that they promised too much to Y as well.
They probably cheered when the Y! didn't go through. Yahoo gambled and lost badly, MSFT was paying cash too (well, half)

I think its a masterful move by Google! What better way to hurt your competition than to keep a deal from happening (by giving yahoo hope) then dropping out last minute and letting everyone drown with no hope. Obviously the less competition Google has the better and if Yahoo goes under Google will just absorb their share of the crowd.
IF and I mean IF Microsoft considers buying Yahoo it will most likely be just the search engine. Once that is done the rest of Yahoo will either be broken up to other companies or just fade away.
Hopefully Microsoft is smart enough to include the Yahoo name in the whole purchase deal.
Just my two cents
Get it live and then we'll talk was the answer. Life is strange.
