EV (Extended Validation) SSL versus SSL

Ive only found old discussions on this but was wondering what people currently thought about EV SSL versus SSL and in particular if they think there is any benefit SEO wise in having an EV SSL.
Most of what I read says there is not but I have also read (from some good SEOs) that they have seen a benefit from an EV SSL). There was a link to a video where John Mueller says there is not difference for rankings between the two currently but there might be in the future (that was 2014).
So just wondering with HTTPS being something that is being pushed by google more and also that there is a new update if anyone had spotted anything recently to suggest that there is or isnt any difference.
Also, if anyone had one - did you noticed any increase in conversions? The SSL companies all push this as a benefit but I suspect that its all just marketing guff as your average consumer probably wouldnt even notice and it they did even know the significance of SSL anyway. Of course having "Not Secure" in the bar could well reduce conversions but having the green padlock or a greenpadlock and your business name is all the same Id imagine

First off, SSL is no longer used. It was replaced with TLS by the Internet Engineering Task Force [en.wikipedia.org] although many webpages will still use the "SSL" term.

EV = Extended Validation, most often used where financial transaction are used. If you're not processing Credit Cards, or similar, just use a normal security certificate.

yeah , but the certificates are pretty muchnever referred to as TLS certificates (maybe ssl/tls certifcates but you go to buy one and it will be called SSL certificate for sure) - im using TLS 1.2 on my site ( I have to as it is a PCI DSS compliant site so is required to pass certain levels of security scanning) . And yes I have credit card processing on the site etc but a standard SSL versus EV SSL doesnt offer any additional protection in itself. It might have a stronger encryption level often but that is nothing to do with the EV - the EV part is just referring to the background checks of the business. I already have an SSL cert installed and am awaiting the issue of my EV cert this week to replace it.

but maybe, google might start treating sites with EV SSL as having being more authoritative , certainly could say they are a bit more trustworthy so maybe they will.Wishful thinking more than anything though at this stage as I have only seen a couple of people say they help with better rankings over standard ssl certs

That will never happen. Google's ranking algo is independent of security agencies.

Those who say EV certs gave them better ranking are misinformed, likely biased because they paid extra for it.

in 2014 John Mueller said in response to types of certificates being better than others " Yeah, so, from our point of view if you implement HTTPS properly then that�s fine for us � it�s not something where we�d say this specific certificate is good and another one is bad. I imagine maybe in the long run we�ll be able to differentiate a little bit more but at the moment it�s really just �either it works or it doesn�t work�."
So whilst it was a vague "i imagine" it seems like it could be something they would look at if they hone their ideas on having https everywhere. Just as likely that they wont though.

G examines TLS v NON-TLS and their chrome browser reports same to the user. At present that is all we know.

No. This will never boost your ranking, to have an EV certificate. If even one day, Google is taking in consideration EV cert vs standard one, this will not be for a ranking boost, eventually, this can be used to establish the authority of a site to talk about... themselve. If two sites claims to be from Microsoft, if one has an EV cert attribute to Microsoft Corp, and the other one "not", then, the first might rank higher than the second, for search about "Microsoft" related queries.

An EV cert is made to establish a relation of trust with the visitor/client, and also prevent phishing; at the condition that the visitor is paying attention.

<future gazing>The day that Google start selling EV TLS certs, will be the day that Google will give a ranking boost to EV TLS certs ( with a little extra boost if they are bought from Google ) , then, one day, Google will discover "problems" with EV TLS certs issued by others, and the "boost" to sites that use "Google EV TLS certs" will be increased, and so on..kinda like sites which buy a spot in Google shopping are at the top of the Google SERPs as opposed to lower down ( but still above the "organics" )..

<aside>I wonder how Google will incorporate "Google shopping" into "voice search" and try to claim it is fair and unbiased when the first 10 results to "OK Google I'd like to buy a widget".. are all paid for "Google shopping" spots..</aside>
