The Canadian government today introduced for first reading (first parliamentary step to enact a bill) BILL C-11 [parl.ca]: An Act to enact the Consumer Privacy Protection Act and the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts.

Similar to EU’s GDPR.

Fact Sheet: Digital Charter Implementation Act, 2020 [ic.gc.ca]
Under the CPPA (Consumer Privacy Protection Act) the Privacy Commissioner would have broad discretion and order making power; a Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal could assess Administrative penalties to 3% of global revenue and fines to 5% of global revenue.

Thank you.

It sounds so soft, compared to the GDPR :)

Wise are those who implemented the GDPR and applied it to all their users / visitors / clients , regarding of their country of origin, because they are ready for almost any regulations.

I suspect this re-invigoration of "privacy" (which most nations already have) in the day of big tech will begin to blossom everywhere.

Proof in the pudding is if actual PII will be protected, anywhere.

Meanwhile, more things for webmasters to take into consideration ... that's the nuts and bolts side of things the bureaucrats sometimes forget about...

Six of one, half dozen of the other...

The flip is at least as true: webdevs pretty much all forget about regulations, fail to understand and treat their sites as a business...

While this specific Canadian law is new both the PII regulatory trend and prior national/regional requirements definitely are not.

Where shall I go? What shall I do?
Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a d*mn.

is increasingly my attitude I fear.
So many so wet so focussed on the glory of the pyramids.

Competitive advantage FTW all over again. Dang but the quotes and memes just keep right on jumping the shark in webdev...
